Since when did Kurachi begin picking things up from vacant lots? She doesn’t go out of her way to travel far for them. Gradually, the collected fragments had a shape of their own.
Everything needs a place to return to, I was told. Like looking for the lost in a crowd, perhaps it’s a gesture to evoke a likeness in the unfamiliar, even if just for a moment … This work, Topogram of Memory — Dwelling of Breath, takes the form of welcoming fragments of unknown memories. Box-like structures spreading beneath a table; small dwellings made from rubble detached from their original sites; photographs and shadows; above and below; inside and outside; image and reflection — it is in the spaces between these elements that the work resides.
