I am interested in the way things look, and that is why I create my work. I hope to create works that will refresh people in their ordinary days by combining things familiar to them daily with scenes from foreign landscapes far removed from their own.
Habu Chihiro
—
The entrance to Chihiro Habu’s paintings is the scene of daily life. Innocent nature appears from that entrance. Everyone may feel a sense of connection with oneself there.
Spacious land, sky, and trees and flowers. Melting snow gushes out of the ground, and there are signs of animals on the narrow paths leading to the mountains. Habu, who was born in Hokkaido, paints in places where her daily life is connected to the scenes she remembers and longs to see. She says, “I feel as if I am entering into the work,” and “I sometimes think about the story in my mind about the picture I am painting. It is easy to see the artist’s delight in traveling through her imagination as she paints, and smiling when she finds a small amusement in an idea she encounters on the canvas.
This exhibition will feature approximately 40 paintings and drawings, including his latest works. Each work will shuffle through time, place, and space to create a view as if they were meeting for the first time. For the artist and the audience, “a different way of seeing” is a new sight.
